Cora "Susie" Baker Obituary

Cora “Susie” Mae Baker of Silver Lake, Indiana passed away peacefully in her residence at 12:26 a.m. on Sunday, February 11, 2018 at the age of 98.

She was born on April 20, 1919 in Warsaw, Indiana to Ernest Bert Marvel and Minnie Opal (Wolfe) Marvel.

She was a lifetime resident of Warsaw, Indiana where she was a 1937 graduate of Warsaw High School.  She was a long time member of Kosciusko County Saddle Club and the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary and a member of Abundant Life Assembly of God.  She worked at Korth Furniture on South Buffalo Street in Warsaw, then went to Da-Lite Screen in Warsaw and worked as a press operator until she retired at the age of 65.

She had always had a strong love for horses, and her passion for horses took her on many trail rides at Francis Slocum Park.  Her presence was always known at the Kosciusko County Fair with her favorite horse “Smokey”.  She was recognized by Don Hostetler of the Kosciusko County Fair Board Association for 20 years attendance with “Smokey”.  Not known by many, but she always had the same stall.

Cora loved to travel and oft times you could find her at Centerville Fair in Michigan.  She was strong willed (stubborn), and tough as nails but she was quick with a smile.  Her laughter would light up a room, she never knew a stranger, and would give the shirt off her back without a second thought.  Her later years were spent living in Silver Lake where she became known as the “lady in the window’.  Cora would sit looking out waving at those passing by, and enjoyed when they always waved back.

She was married to Wilbur Lewis Baker and together they had six sons. Surviving are four sons:  Jerry W. Baker (Warsaw, Indiana); Garry Baker (Pierceton, Indiana); Larry (wife Mary) E. Baker (Pierceton, Indiana); and Terry L. Baker (Silver Lake, Indiana). She also leaves behind 16 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 21 great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, one brother, and two sons, David Baker, who passed away shortly after birth and Danny Baker.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 from 11:00 – 1:00 p.m. at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw, Indiana.

Her funeral service will follow immediately after her visitation at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home and officiated by her son Terry Baker.  Burial will follow with a graveside service at Hillcrest Cemetery in Pierceton.

Memorial donations may be directed to the Fellowship Missions, P.O. Box 382, Winona Lake, Indiana  46590 and would be appreciated by the family.
