William “Bill” A. Henning of Grace Village Retirement Community in Winona Lake, Indiana passed away at 8:25 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, 2019 at Grace Village Health Care at the age of 83.
He was born on July 1, 1935 in Blantyre, Ontario, Canada to Sarah Lina (Sewell) Henning and Ralph McClure Henning. He was raised in India as the son of missionaries, returning to the United States for high school. On August 17, 1957 he was married to Rose Marie (Hesselgrave) Henning, who survives.
Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1955 and served until his honorable discharge in 1957. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. He continued on with his education and earned his Master’s degree and PhD from Indiana University. He taught French at Indiana University and later at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. He then went on to teach French at Wheaton College in Illinois where he became an Academic Dean for five years. Bill then took a position at Fresno Pacific College where he served as the Academic Vice President and later returned back to teaching at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri. After retirement he and his wife moved to Winona Lake, Indiana where they were members of Warsaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church. His favorite teaching job was as a retired volunteer professor at G.I.A.L. for Wycliffe Bible Translators in Dallas, Texas. Bill was a person who never tired of teaching. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Rose Marie Henning (Warsaw, Indiana); daughter: Beverly (Todd) Penner (Kenora, Ontario); son: Paul (Jenny) Henning (Warsaw, Indiana); five grandchildren: Drew, Melissa, Rebecca, Terry, and Stephanie; and his sister: Emma Lou Henning (Warsaw, Indiana). He was preceded in death by his parents.
His memorial service will be celebrated at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at Warsaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 210 S. High Street, Warsaw, Indiana and officiated by Pastor Jace Broadhurst. There will be time for visitation prior to the service from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. Burial will take place at a later date at Springfield Cemetery in Brookville, Indiana. Arrangements were entrusted to Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw, Indiana.
