Betty Schuman Obituary

Betty Lucille Alderfer Schuman of Winona Lake, Indiana passed away at 12:40 a.m. on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at Miller’s Merry Manor of Warsaw at the age of 79.

She was born on January 28, 1939 in Argos, Indiana to Harold Swihart and Helen M. (Miller) Swihart.  On June 28, 1957 she was married to Forest “Frosty” Alderfer, he passed away on June 18, 1987.  Betty then re-married on September 30, 2000 to Larry Schuman, he preceded her in death on February 23, 2005. 

She was a 1957 graduate of Plymouth High School and was a resident of Kosciusko County, Indiana for the past 54 years.  Betty worked at Owens Grocery Store in Warsaw, Indiana for a number of years and worked as an administrator for 20 years at First National Bank.  She enjoyed gardening and sewing.  Over the years she had sewn many projects for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be forever loved and dearly missed.

She will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters:  Terri (husband Pat) Musto (Lakeville, Minnesota); and Barb (husband Chris) Ballinger (Warsaw, Indiana).  Also surviving are three grandchildren:  Gina Musto, Trevor Ballinger and Jeffrey Ballinger; four great-grandchildren:  Laila, Olivia, Ellie and Rhett Ballinger; and fourteen step-grandchildren.  She also leaves behind five step-children:  Keith, Duane, Nelson, and Chris Schuman; and Jana MacFarlane; brother:  Richard Swihart (Machesney Park, Illinois); and half-brother:  Rex Tumbleson (South Bend, Indiana).  She was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 14, 2018 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Plymouth, Indiana and officiated by Reverend Kip Cone.  Arrangements are entrusted with Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw, Indiana.

Memorial donations may be directed to American Cancer Society, Great Lakes Division – Northwest Indiana Office, 130 Red Coach Drive, Mishawaka, Indiana  46545 and would be appreciated by her family.
