Lawrence A. “Jack” Horney, Jr. of Grace Village Retirement Community in Winona Lake, Indiana passed away at 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at Grace Village Health Care at the wonderful age of 98.
Jack was born on December 14, 1924, in Sterling, Colorado to Hazel (Morton) Horney and Lawrence Horney, Sr. He was raised in Huntingburg, Indiana and graduated from high school in 1942. At the age of 17 ½ Jack enlisted in the U.S. Navy on June 19, 1942. He was a proud WWII Veteran who served on the USS George Clymer and was honorably discharged on January 5, 1946. Later in his life he was honored as a veteran and participated in the Honor Flight to Washington DC to the World War II Memorial.
He was married on October 28, 1948, to Dorothy Mae Bockelman and they shared 36 years of marriage together before she passed away May 25, 1984. Jack was blessed to have met someone new to share his life with and married Mary Lou Robertson on March 29, 1985. Mary Lou passed away August 8, 2004.
Jack moved from Texas to the Warsaw, Indiana area in 1967. He retired in 1989 from Zimmer Inc. in Warsaw, Indiana after 15 years in the quality control department. Jack always kept busy and enjoyed being part of the community he lived in. He was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, served on the Oakwood Cemetery Board for 12 years, was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus #4511, Elks Lodge, V.F.W. #1126 and the American Legion Post #49 all of Warsaw. Aside from loving sports, Jack had a vagabond spirit in him and loved to travel. He also enjoyed a competitive card game, the sand of Hilton Head beaches, being very frugal and always found the humor in his last name! Jack will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who will be forever missed by his loved ones.
He leaves behind three daughters, Kathy (Mark) Workman (Warsaw, IN); Phyllis (George) Kolopanis (Normal, IL); Mary Beth (William) Geist (Hilton Head, SC); son, David (Debbie) Horney (Fishers, IN); and two step-daughters, Joyce (Jerry) Parcell (North Webster, IN); and Janet Shriver (Bedford, TX). Also surviving are nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren; and his longtime friend, Mary Ulmer (Winona Lake, IN). He was preceded in death by two wives, and step-daughter, Jeanne Garner.
Friends and family may visit from 10:00 – 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw, Indiana. Jack’s life will be celebrated by Father Jonathan Norton with a funeral mass following visitation at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 125 N. Harrison Street, Warsaw, Indiana. Military rites will be conducted by members of the American Legion Post #49, V.F.W. #1126 both of Warsaw and active-duty members of the Navy Honor Guard. He will be laid to rest at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery of Warsaw.
