Joene Cover Obituary

Due to the current guidelines regarding public gatherings because of the COVID-19 virus and safety concerns, please use good judgment in determining the length of your visit or if you should attend.  If six feet of social distancing is not maintained then masks are required for the visitation and service.  There will be no congregating in the parking lot.

Joene Ladeen Cover, 88, entered the presence of the Lord at 9:17 a.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2020.  She passed away at Grace Village Retirement Community in Winona Lake, Indiana.

She and her twin sister were born on February 16, 1932 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Sadie (Stewart) Toon and William Riley Toon.  On July 3, 1953 she was married to Robert James Cover, Sr. in Tracy, California.  They shared 64 years of marriage together before he passed away on December 22, 2017.

Joene spent her life spreading the word of her Lord in everything she did.  She and her husband Bob spent 10 years as missionaries in Argentina from 1960 -1970.  Joene taught Spanish, as well as English as a Second Language in various schools in California and Indiana.  After a number of years in California they moved to Warsaw, Indiana where she eventually taught Spanish at Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana.  She always felt the calling to serve and enjoyed mentoring younger women and taught Sunday school for many years as a longtime member of Conservative Grace Brethren Church in Warsaw.  Joene was always good with her hands and was great with detail work.  She loved homemaking, growing flowers, especially roses, reading, singing, any kind of sewing, especially quilting, knitting, and crossword and jigsaw puzzles.  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many.  Family was very important to Joene, but she would most want to be remembered for her steadfast faith in her Savior, Jesus Christ.

She will be lovingly remembered by her two sons:  Robert (Lisa) Cover, Jr. (Warsaw, Indiana); David (Sandi) Cover (Richland, Michigan); and two daughters:  Viki (John) Rife (Warsaw, Indiana); Lynette Lowe (Okeechobee, Florida).  Also surviving are her beloved eight grandchildren:  Kelly (Justin) Bowers (Oceanside, California); Laura (Nathan) Hoffard (Las Vegas, Nevada); James (Amy) Rife (Jefferson, Maine); Robert (Michelle) Cover III (Warsaw, Indiana); Timothy (Brittney) Cover (Warsaw, Indiana); Ladeen (Doug) Zielasko (Warsaw, Indiana); Stephen Cover (Dayton, Ohio); Kristine (Caleb) Bowen (Gull Lake, Michigan); great-grandchildren: Natalie and Luke Bowers; Ben, Micah and Jacob Hoffard; Carver and Eva Rife; Emma, Abigail, Isabelle and Moses Cover; Valarie, Elijah and Elana Zielasko; as well as two brothers: Glenn (Judy) Toon and Terry (Janice) Toon; and seven sisters: Dovie, Virginia, Dolly, Molly, Carolyn, Marilyn (John) and Erma (Gary).  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Bob, four sisters, one brother, her great-granddaughter, Sadie Elizabeth Rife in 2011 and her son-in-law, James Lowe.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 – 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw, Indiana.  Joene’s life will be celebrated with a service immediately following visitation at 1:00 p.m. and officiated by Chaplain Bryan Benjamin.  Burial will follow with a graveside service at Oakwood Cemetery of Warsaw, Indiana.

Memorial donations may be directed to Grace Village Health Care, 337 Grace Village Drive, Winona Lake, Indiana  46590 and designated to “Caring Friends”.
