Pastor George Hemmingsen Obituary

Pastor George Bernard Hemmingsen of Winona Lake, Indiana went home to be with his Lord and Savior at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at the age of 90 at Grace Village Health Care in Winona Lake, Indiana.

He was born on April 5, 1931 in Dayton, Ohio to Rose Mae (Hurley) Hemmingsen and George Edward Hemmingsen.  At the age of 19, George married his high school sweetheart, Evelyn Mae Karns on August  5, 1950.    They raised four children, experienced the joy of becoming grandparents, and shared their lives in everything they did throughout the 71 years of marriage they were blessed with before he passed away.

George graduated from Kiser High School in Dayton, Ohio in 1950.  In 1956 he graduated from Olivet Nazarene University in Kankakee, Illinois and in 1960 he graduated from Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri.  With his lovely wife Evelyn by his side, together they pastored eight Nazarene Churches in the following cities, Arnold, Nebraska, and in Indiana, Churubusco, Shipshewana, Muncie, Marion, Elkhart, Lynn and Anderson.  George’s passion was sharing Christ and the gospel, he dedicated his life as a faithful servant to his Lord.

He retired in 1996 and spent 17 years in St. Petersburg, Florida before moving to Warsaw, Indiana in 2011.  He enjoyed fishing, loved the Cincinnati Bengals and the Cincinnati Reds.  Most of all he dearly loved his family and will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend.  George would most want to be remembered for his faith in his Savior Jesus Christ.

He leaves behind his wife:  Evelyn Mae Hemmingsen (Winona Lake, Indiana); son:  Doug (Tammy) Hemmingsen (North Webster, Indiana); and three daughters:  Sandi (Ken) Southerland (Kansas);   Cheryl (Ken) Pearson (Milford, Indiana); and Linda (David) Goshert (Leesburg, Indiana).  Also surviving are fifteen grandchildren, thirty-three great-grandchildren; brother:  Cleve (Bobbie) Hemmingsen (Dayton, Ohio); sister:  Geraldine Young (Dayton, Ohio), and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers-in-law.

Visitation will be held prior to his service from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 18, 2021 at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw, Indiana.  George’s life will be celebrated at 4:00 p.m. and officiated by Pastor Tom Beers.  Burial will take place at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery of Warsaw.
